Our Triumphant Human Context
Successive life cycles are ours to organize, who's in?
In a wide ranging discussion the philosopher Matt Segall and regenerative scientist Dr. Michael Levin agree that Evolution ‘s direction can be seen as its increasing awareness of our genome. Similar to the notion of selfish genes—life extension and successive life cycles of individuals can be viewed as another of Evolution’s ‘arrows’—observing us as we expand or renew our franchise in this virgin Universe. In contrast to the selfish genes trope—which totals up their diaspora over many species and generations—Matt and Mike are here describing the same criteria for ‘success’ being fulfilled by individual humans living longer, or self-replicating to experience additional life cycles with the same genome, and not merely as the sum of some dissociated parts.
This inclusive model of Evolution also echoes Dr. Levin’s work on purpose and goals within somatic cells, as their bioelectrical trails beget prediction and awareness as the drivers of consciousness.…
